Journalists Matter Campaign

The safety of journalists is widely recognised at an international level as paramount to the freedom of expression and democracy. But the fundamental rights of journalists are not always acknowledged or respected. As such, in 2023, The Council of Europe launched a powerful ‘Journalists Matter’ campaign to encourage the freedom of the press, quality news, and a healthy media ecosystem.

The Press and Information Office (PIO) was entrusted to launch the initiative in Cyprus, and the appios® team was selected to create a powerful brand identity for the local campaign. The overall aim was to help raise awareness about journalists' safety and defend the essence of pluralistic democracy.

Inspired by the power of journalism and free speech, the creative studio was determined to create a simple yet attention-grabbing logo to help spread the word among the media community, government officials, and the general public. This is reflected in the bold brandmark and the simple tagline: ‘Protecting the Press concerns us all’. The black, red, dark grey, and white colour palette perfectly complements the powerful geometric New Hero sans font for maximum impact.

The branding needed to be attention-grabbing, smart, and substantial. A simple yet powerful design with maximum impact.
Colour played an important role in establishing the brandmark’s unique personality. So we opted for a striking palette to convey a feeling of certainty and trust.
