I Only Ask for Light

The A. G. Leventis Gallery assigned the appios® team to design the contemporary exhibition 'Michael Michaelides - I only ask for Light'. Michael Michaeledes’ (1923-2016) artistic journey is characterized by the continuous study and research of his contemporaries, leading to the realization of a purely personal idiom with the creation of geometric stretch canvases.

The studio created an identity inspired by Michaeledes’ way of working – with three-dimensional forms extruded under white fabric. The typeface used was purposely minimal and non-intrusive so as to contrast with the paintings by the artist.

A completely black and white colour palette ensured that the exhibition design would stay in the background while the contemporary art shown in the space took the lead role.

Publication

The publication, set in a simple, legible font is printed using an embossing method as a node to the forms Michaeledes played with in his works. The publication’s size, a stretched A5, is easy to hold and read through.

Full bleed details of the artist’s works are printed throughout the book, with matched colours so as to appear as close to the real-life paintings as possible.
